C-fiber pain does a lot more movement outside the brainstem and goes elsewhere. A quarter to a tenth of the C-fiber neurons actually make it to the thalamus. And they did some studies in animals where they actually sectioned. So they made a cut above the brainstem on animals. They elicited a painful or anoxious stimuli. The animal still produced effects that were suggestive of suffering.
