Introduction
Egon Zecraiszuk is a senior advisor in the monetary and economic department at the BIS. Social banks have been hiking interest rates in response to the global surge in inflation. Several emerging market economies moved first in early 2021, advanced economies followed suit by the end of that year. He says policymakers must decide speed and size of interest rate increases and how long to keep the policy rate at the peak - or so-called terminal rate.
