The Importance of Fluoride in Dentistry
The U.S. Public Health Service performed tests measuring the natural fluoride concentration in several municipal water supplies. By 1942, they determined that discoloration was very rare at concentrations of one part per million or less. Grand Rapids, Michigan became the first city to implement artificial water fluoridation in 1945 and the technique took off from there. In a five-year study conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics from 1999 to 2004, researchers found almost one-fourth of Americans had experienced some form of dental fluorosis.
