When students are working vertically rather than horizontally, everyone is oriented to where words are working in the same direction. When it's vertical, they can see each other's work, which promotes knowledge mobility and gives greater access to more ideas. Having students stand and work on vertical whiteboards was by far the most effective space for them to work; now comes the quest for the why.
