There are many reasons why the trend towards a greater trade opening and integration is now reversing. In advance economy, of course, those were workers in labor-intensive manufacturing. Many of them lost their jobs because of cheaper goods and services being produced by China. So there was already a pushback by those who were left behind. Because even trade liberalization that increases the economic pie creates winners and losers.
