The two main daughters that we spend time with are Desi who runs a dress shop and then her dress shop goes south when like factory made dresses come into fashion. He kind of drives her out of business and then Olive who is Steinbeck's mother gets a few chapters in the middle of the book. Mostly he's like my mom's rad. She went in a plane once and she hated the Germans during the war and then we don't talk about her. There's George who's the old boy is good and there's Joe who's the baby. Everybody's got to love him. That's you.
After 488 episodes, we finally return to ol' Johnny Steinbeck. East of Eden mixes autobiography, pastoral fiction, and Biblical allegory -- a cocktail that has dismayed critics and excited audiences for decades. We dig into what works in this sprawling story and what might leave some readers wanting more.
