In 1525, peasant bands throughout southern Germany began communally resisting the authority of their alleged overlords. The princes of the empire were slow to respond, but eventually began marshalling their own mercenary armies. Luther wrote a book meant to resolve any ambiguities that may have been perceived about his stance on rebellion against the state as opposed to rebellion against Rome.
