The Language Diversity of the Americas

I don't know if the same kind of dynamic occurred in the Americas as it was over there and if that was driven by literacy or not. Europe once had the language diversity that America had. Successive waves of invaders fixed that. But I think it has more to do with the more isolated communities can be, the more diverse the linguistic situation will be.
