Ryan: Strategy is the act of making choices to do some things and not others. He says if you can't say that specifically, then you don't have a strategy worth checking a stick at. "If nobody's done the opposite of what you're doing, you haven't made one," he adds.

"Too often CEO's will allow what's urgent to crowd out what's really important. It's wrong to define strategy as following best practices. This creates sameness and sameness is not a strategy. It's a recipe for mediocrity."
