Richard Pierce founded an NPO called Sustainable Dyson with the explicit goal of conserving Japanese giant salamanders in the Nawa River Basin. Pierce, who is British, by the way, works as an eco-tourism consultant. He designs nature and adventure tours and even accompanies people on them. The project has been delayed, but it hasn't been canceled.
