The History of Attica
Athens emerged as one of the leading Greek cities economically, probably due to its central location and access to the greater Aegean Sea. A series of rich graves in the Caramikos reveal that in the 9th and 8th centuries BC there was overseas trade taking place,. And new settlements appear throughout Attica, perhaps through internal colonization from the plain of Athens. None attempted to declare its independence as happened elsewhere, nor were there a subordinate populations such as the Spartan Helots, or Perioicoi.
