The awkwardness of the body positioning, the body proportions, the face is just not as sensitive or as smoothly executed as other paintings by Vermeer. At every layer of the painting, there was some fatal flaw that an experienced artist like Vermeer at this stage in his career simply would not have made. To me, it's wonderful that there's live scholarship about Vermeer still active right now. We're still talking about these extraordinary and frankly mysterious images.
