Putin's Overriding Priority Is to Restore Atleast Some of the Great Power Status
Vladimir Putin's speech was very consistent with remarks he's been making throughout this conflict. He really does appear to view this as something, if not existential for Russia, then at least perhaps existential for himself. What happened in February 2022 was a culmination of a long process of a mixture of fear resentment and a desire to reassert itself.
