The cells are chromosomeally female, starting from a single X, Y, male. The next step is then to get two X chromosomes. Instead of trying to insert an X chromosome from somewhere else, they cloned these cells again and let them reproduce until there was another mistake. They added a compound called reverseine, reverseine, which promotes errors, basically causes more errors. And then in that way, they got these cells which had two X chromosomes - but it does not make a baby mouse.

Researchers have engineered bacteria with synthetic genomes to be immune to viral infection. The team streamlined the bacteria’s genetic code, and re-engineered the protein-producing machinery to insert the wrong amino acid if used by a virus, effectively making the bacteria ‘speak’ a different language to any invaders. It’s hoped that this technique could be used to reduce unwanted sharing of genes from modified organisms.
