Jung's early works have more to do with technical aspects of therapy than anything. He became interested in mythology to understand the bizarre mental productions of schizophrenics. By 1928, he felt there was something missing, and that's when he got a text from Richard Wilhelm which showed a breaking apart into opposites in it coming together. That's when he started reading alchemy. And so he got his basic ideas by 1928, I would say. Then spent the rest of his life thinking through all the implications of what he discovered by 1928.
