Movies like Blade Runner try to force people to face fundamental issues that will awaken them to human concern. They're just trying to say in the clearest way, what is the crisis? People feel unhappy. It's not that some artists created dark vision or that you and I are pessimistic with our intellectual vocabulary. We do keep trying morally and intellectually to figure out our situation. So these movies are in that sense, life affirming, even though they seem very pessimistic.
