The Palmer Raids

Palmer's presidential ambitions were derailed by the Palmer raids. Congressional investigations determined that Hoover's general intelligence division had collected and indexed rumors and unverified claims for about 450,000 Americans. The ACLU issued a 15 page pamphlet Charging that the Bureau of Investigation had become a secret police system of a political character. In 1924 following the discredited Palmer raids and the teapot dome political scandal a meeting took place that would determine the future of the FBI. Harlan Fisk Stone asked Edgar Hoover to clean up the mess in the Bureau. Next week on American history tellers J Edgar Hoover transforms America from its own citizens into an international crime syndicate.
