I think it's worth taking seriously the idea that for certain groups of americans, plural, who currently have materially the tools to engage in healthier life decisions, they are not doing the utmost. The problem there is one all of those are going to become questions of, what is the government's role in forcing people to make better choices? And how do you square restoring a sense of full self esteem if your prior sense of self esteem were hierarchically based? I don't think that this is just about, like, white, less educated Americans. It could be related to broad er mental health or spiritual concerns about their place in society.
