The Value of Personification in the Ancient Religions
One of the most important mentors I ever had intellectually was Walter Ong. The shift from orality, oral cultures to literate cultures just damn near changed everything. And it's one of the reasons why there's never been a sustainable or even close to it, literate civilization. So Greek and Roman's and other cultures personifying say, you know, lust as eros or Cupid, it's a personification. We find it easier to relate to a personification than we do an abstraction.
