There's a quote from jamieson green, who's great trans historian. He essentially says something like we start distancing ourselves from them to almost protect us from what we think might be rejection. And i definitely did that with some of my immediate family. I did that with my grandparents, because it's hard, it's so hard to think you might lose them and almost want to lose them on your own terms. But after a lot of, many, many years of putting it off and struggling with doing it, it eventually got a lot better than it ever was before.
