I agree with you that people have very wrong ideas about what science is. I think theit it's slightly unfair to put the blame on universities. The misconception arose originally for quite good reasons. It was a wonderful defence against previous forms of authority, which were not only invalid, but stultifying. So it was a good defence, but not actually true. And er in the twentieth century, people started taking it seriously as not just as a defence, but as being literally true.
