The 17 Principles of Environmental Justice

The Warren County protests in 1982 brought civil rights activism to the fight against environmental inequities. The 1987 report, Toxic Waste and Race in the U.S. set the stage for a national environmental justice movement. 30 years later, the 17 principles hashed out at the summit are still the defining ideals guiding the movement today. A study found that black Americans are 75% more likely to live near a hazardous waste facility than the average American.
