Annie asked, Would you tell us the story? Dog kings started to say no, but the bork was closer now. A volley of fireborks exploded overhead, their thunder echoing down through the shelter. The dogs whined and dug and Dog King could see they were bordering on panic. He had to do something to calm them down, something to keep them distracted. It's not a happy story, Dog King said finally. I was out with a friend, my oldest one, the one I grew up with. We went together like dirt and tennis balls, like peanut butter and bones,. Like a hot garbage can half open and a stinking sweet summer day.
