This past year, Gessen heard those stories again in the key suburbs of Bucia and Erpín. The people I was interviewing for the most part were not wealthy at all. And it made perfect sense once I thought about it. People who had the means left as the Russian military advanced. War crimes disproportionately happened to the poor, not exclusively, but disproportionately.
