The holy Inquisition formally began in 1184 under Pope Lucius III to crush the popular movement of Catholicism. The Cathars, from the Greek catharoy, had fashioned their own brand of mannequianism. Mani himself was flayed alive at the behest of Zoroastrian priests who held that the material world had been created by Satan and was inherently evil.
