It was mired in corruption scandals you probably heard a bit from Professor Snyder already about Leonid Krafchuk who came through the Communist Party and then his successor Leonid Kuchma. In September 2000 this era is probably personified or symbolized by a brutal murder and assassination of a Georgian Ukrainian journalist young, Georgian Ukrainian journalist Gyo Gungadza during Kuchma's reign. There wasn't spread violence in mass against the population but if you were a dissident journalist or if you were making trouble in particular then you were clearly very vulnerable.
