The Pathophysiology of an Acute Pulmonary Hypertensive Crisis

A pulmonary hypertensive crisis occurs when the pulmonary vasculature presents with such a high resistance that there is little or no preload to the left ventricle. This can be triggered by multiple causes, including parenchoma lung disease, fever, pain, anxiety and tracheal suctioning. Once this point is reached, it is rare that cardiopulmonary resuscitation will sufficiently return cardiac output without significant multi-organ damage.
