CHAPTER

The Hard Problem With Consciousness

There is a basic epistemological problem for consciousness. I can be certain that I'm conscious, but do I really know about anyone else's state of consciousness? There's no direct way to measure and access your subjective experiences let alone those in another animal or an AI system. Maybe what we can do is just build the best theory of consciousness we can for humans under this principle and then try and extend it to animals. It would get messy if it turns out there are three or four different theories, all of which look consistent with the human data that extend to animals and AI systems in different ways.
