We need god's assistance remain steadfast on the difficult paths of intellectual work when it's tempting to cut corners and be self serving. The dominican order was instituted not for the sake of study, but for the purposes of preaching. And so if we're called to the intellectual life, we should make it a habit, not only to pray before study, but also before teaching and writing. We have his own example of the way that he practised theology. There many other accounts as when saint thomas was facing some difficulty in his work.
