Introduction
Claire Deederer's Monsters is about a fan's dilemma. She explores the psychology of fandom, its intense highs and its sometimes troubling lows in her study fans. The writer Devica Panambalam tells the story of Teja Hamana, the young Tahitian girl who appears in many of Gogans most notable paintings. Was she just his subject or his victim too? And if it was the latter, does a once beautiful painting turn into the record of a crime?
