In the early 1930s, people were still trying to nail down all the meanings of this complicated civil war by memorializing it. Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, where John Brown led his famous raid in 1859, has two monuments there. One is a six foot tall obelisk that kind of looks like a miniature Washington monument.
