The Importance of Familiarity in Pop Music

Jamie xx: Sometimes a familiar sounding song can be an original. I see people getting nervous, especially those people that have been threatened with the idea of lawsuits before or been in lawsuits before. There's only 12 notes so things start to sound familiar, even when they're not directly copied. The issue here is that familiarity, especially in the pop world, you're making pop music for the masses.
