A government evacuation scheme known as operation pied piper had been in the planning for over a year. Its aim was to move children away from the risk of german bombs. kitty and her two older sisters, mary and hetty, were sent off as part of the huge operation. They recall looking around when as we're going on the train, and seeing lots of knots of soldiers.
