Sidney's Defense of Poetry
Sidney was a high-ranking aristocrat who might have been expected to distinguish himself through warfare and diplomacy. He fell out of royal favor after advocating too openly for a strong stance against Spain. So he may have seen his literary career as a kind of consolation prize. Ironically, this made him the ideal messenger for promoting poetry among his aristocratic peers.
