How to Design Modern Buildings That Are Earthquake-Proof
We have developed technologies that can ensure that structures will suffer damage during a strong earthquake, but they will not collapse. We always design modern structures to fail in the beams, and this means that vertical elements like the columns remain intact. This essentially ensures that the building will experience damage and cracks. The frequencies that these long buildings vibrate are out of the frequencies that the earthquakes typically trigger. So it is very hard by measuring stresses that happen within the ground to predict exactly where the ground is going to break.
