The Rise of Public Education in the United States
The story of how working people deal with schools in 19th century is really fascinating. In some states like New York and Pennsylvania, it's actually working associations that were pushing for public support for education. There was some resistance even from working class communities in particular to compulsory education. By the end of the 19th century, most kids are going to at least some grammar school; maybe through fifth or sixth grade.
