The Evolution of Socialism
Habermas would argue that bourgeois values develop over time and as the contradictions between these values and the bourgeois state's actions become increasingly evident this kicks off legitimation crises. Would you have any truck with that version of Habermas or do you think that there's something wrong in that account? I don't mind that version ofhabermas except that Habermas turned away from a Marxist conception of the world where what was most significant was not merely any and all sensuous expressions but rather productive ones. In other words while civil society is important what is fundamental are the social relationships around production which have to be altered if we're going to really transcend the contemporary contradictions.
