The Role of Race in Jury Selection
The Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 has spurred a deep engagement with the fact that black jurors are not seated at the same rate as white jurors. An all white jury is not representative of a cross-section of the community, right? It's not reflecting the diversity of our population. We'll get to how the jury selection process itself plays into this, but there are other factors that also result in jury pools not necessarily representing the community at large.
