The Doldrums and Boat Spirits

The Fonoiguri were sometimes attributed with ladling water into ships and causing them to sink, or just by their very presence. Some have theorized that this might occur due to dead water. The idea of any kind of enormous being emerging from the water, it instantly makes us think of whales. There may be some connection there between these legendary creatures and whale sightings.
