Controlled Mechanical Ventilation - What's Next?

There are several controlled or mandatory modes, and i think it's helpful to consider these in the context of how they were developed. The most basic mode puts the patient completely at the mercy of the mechanical ventilator. In s i m v, the ine is programmed to look for patient effort during a set window. And if it detects that breath effort within that window, it will go ahead and give a fully supported breath. If the patient goes through the entire window of opportunity and doesn't make an effort,  the patient will deliver emsir the ventilator will deliver the breath anyway.
