The Mona Lisa

It is believed that Leonardo da Vinci began painting the Mona Lisa in either 1503 or 1504 after he moved to Florence. The painting never left the artist's possession during his lifetime. It was inherited by King Francis I of France, who displayed it at Fontainebleau and Versailles before moving it to the Louvre in 1804. Some art historians even claim that he may have tinkered with the painting up through 1517.
