I think that it may have had something to do with the success of chinese food at the time. My dad talks about going to the garden view restaurant after bard to get the crip crispy wantons with sweet and sour sauce, and no things like egg rolls and sweet and sour chicken balls. And i think t he may have noticed that and just said, well, everybody here seems to like sweet things. So let's try a sweet sauce. And it worked.
