The History of the First Universities
The first universities were formed in paris and bologna around the year 12 hundred. They evolved as students and masters like abelar and his disciples, formed guilds based on the new corporate idea. The next decisive moment happened in 12 15, when the pope granted the university its first official statutes. Within a few years, oxford joined the club of universities as a close third on the other side of the channel. Then came montpellieu, cambridge, salam ca and so on.
