The Paradox of Faith
Cilcio perceived among his fellow Christians a kind of complacency, an assumption that faith was something easy. He wants to highlight the fact that Abraham's faith appears to be paradoxical and morally abhorrent. Cilcio is trying to unsettle people who might have had a fairly uncritical, unquestioning acceptance of the story of Abraham.
