Gerard's pessimistic view of human nature also aligns with a Thomistic, Augustinian, Catholic view of nature. He thinks the only way out of this is a unilateral renunstment of violence. However, he thinks that while that's a logical possibility, it's a statistical impossibility. So in that framework, one very well could say that there is a just war theory because this is impossible.
