He had to accommodate the vision of other sculptors, he says. He also had to accommodate the written word of scripture because the story of David was not his to invent. These constraints played a role in drawing from that stone the shepherd that he had read about and that he had imagined. And so what we have is David. I cannot think of a single thing in my life that doesn't bear the touch of others and you can't either. We would never have Michael Angelo's David if those choices hadn't been made for him. But that's not what happened.
