Humphrey Bogart and George Raft in the Maltese Falcon
George Raft was offered the lead in The Maltese Falcon, but turned it down. Bogart's friendship with co-stars Peter Lorry and Mary Aster cemented on set. Aster claimed she and Bogart had a brief affair during the shoot. In 1941 he returned home sober to find Mayo in a drunken rage. She lunged at him with a butcher knife, and the knife ended up in his back. It took another bad decision by George Raft to bring another career-defining role to Humphrey Bogart.
