In 1928, Augusta Savage applied for a scholarship to study in Paris. The committee at Fontainebleau refused her because she was African-American. Her story made national headlines and drew support from the Harlem Renaissance. She stayed in New York and sculpted busts of many of the same leaders who had spoken up for her.
