I saw his bright red eyes and his hooves for hands," says the author of "The Pigman" The story is based on an incident that happened during winter break when he was 12 years old. He recalls being scared to death by what he saw but had no explanation as to how it could be real. His parents told him they were just trying to keep kids safe from scary things in mine shafts.
