The Mohammed Movement in Mecca
A group of followers that mohammed began to gather in mecca in 612. This was something very new and unusual in arabia, because it was a cross tribal group. These were people who were showing their loyalty towards a leader based on theology - not blood ties. By around 618 or so, the the mohammed movement had grown large enough that it really threatened to challenge the dominance of the tribal elders. The kurash ib, the main a ruling tribe of of mecca, from which mohammed himself descended, refused to trade with them as they did not buy food.
